Sebastian Göbel Project Engineer Oral Care – Product & Project Engineering Braun

After my doctorate in engineering (plastics) at RWTH Aachen University, the question was what my career in industry should be: in R&D, technical sales or manufacturing technology? Since I had studied materials science at Berlin Technical University and gained first professional experience in business consulting and product marketing before my doctorate, many doors were open to me when the time came to start applying for jobs.

How I came to Braun

I first came into contact with Braun in a small research project I had worked on for Braun at university. The people and the company made a very positive impression on me, and I was very happy when it was suggested to me that I should apply for a job. But my real passion was research and development, especially since I had a very good offer from a company engaged in exactly my field (plasma CVD). After my second interview with this company, I was certain that I would accept this position and was just about to cancel my appointment with Braun, to which I had been invited in the meantime. But since I was curious to find out more about the company, I went to Kronberg after all. It didn’t cost anything to just go and take a look. And then, my contract with Brown was signed shortly afterwards.

Why Braun?
I was looking for a position where I can keep taking on new challenges, where my technical expertise is needed and where I can acquire management skills. Braun offered me a job in Product & Project Engineering, which fit the bill precisely. The responsibility here is to manage the start of production of new products (e.g. electrical toothbrushes), including responsibility for costs and schedules. This is done as a leader of an interdisciplinary team of engineers jointly with whom the task is solved. Doing so provides in-depth insight into all processes needed to manufacture the final product taking account of real-life requirements, i.e. costs, quality and deadlines, that nobody was interested in at university. You can acquire considerable technical know-how and management competence in this job.

My start at Braun

On my first working day, I was surprised to find that everything had been prepared perfectly: a desk, telephone, computer and a detailed induction program. During the first months, I was kept away from daily business operations and given opportunity to meet all my contacts in the production plants (Germany, Ireland, USA), at headquarters in Boston, and in the technical development departments. It was also determined in which areas I still needed additional knowledge, and a corresponding training program was designed. Then, I was gradually integrated into the project work step by step.

First project experiences
After one year at Braun, I now lead my first own project (launch of a new product). I really enjoy the work with the highly competent and motivated team thoroughly. Especially working in „multinational cross-functional“ teams is such an enrichment because you get to know other (work) cultures. And the work is never boring because you need to master new challenges every day. I would always opt for Braun again.
