Procter & Gamble’s Research and Development organization has an opening for a PhD Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopist at our Mason, Ohio site. We seek a highly motivated spectroscopist who will focus on advancing innovation programs and on supporting business efforts across the Company’s business sectors and upstream innovations. You will join a state-of-the-art laboratory where both teamwork and individual initiative are highly valued.

Using a wide range of NMR techniques (including high resolution liquids NMR, low field NMR, MRI, solid state NMR, and relaxation and diffusion measurements), the team delivers insights and data that uncover molecular interactions, structure and dynamics in complex fluids, molecular structure, quantitative mixture composition, and product mechanisms of action for a variety of products and materials. The NMR team anticipates future and emerging technical needs by building and implementing capabilities designed to accelerate solving the toughest technical challenges arising in P&G’s diverse and broad-based business categories. The solid state NMR spectroscopist will lead development and application of methodologies for our growing need to characterize flexible polymer films, polymer cross-linking, chemical speciation in complex mixtures, and molecular aggregate properties.

- Applying mastery in NMR spectroscopy to deliver results across our business categories and upstream technology platforms.

- Shared responsibilities for laboratory operations within our state-of-the-art laboratories, with each team member responsible for specific instrument maintenance and related needs (e.g. training, open-shop user management).

- Advancing our capabilities to adopt and/or create ground-breaking methodologies, broadening the skills of each team member across the NMR suite of methods.

You would be an excellent fit if you have the following skills or experiences:

- PhD in Analytical, Physical or Organic Chemistry or Polymer Science

- Expertise in NMR spectroscopy with an emphasis on Solid State NMR. This should include experimental design, direct utilization of NMR instrumentation, and data analysis. The ideal candidate will have experience maintaining an NMR instrument and associated accessories.

- Significant experience in polymer characterization; knowledge of formulated product chemistries and technologies is a plus.

- Strong knowledge of organic molecular structure and reactivity.

- Problem solver who can break the technical challenge into tangible problem statements and develop testable hypotheses.

- Experience in common coding languages (e.g. MatLal, Python) will enable utilization of code written by the NMR team and creation of code that facilitates data transformations.

- Excellent interpersonal skills.
