P&G and Sustainability

In order to improve the lives of the world's consumers - now and for generations to come - P&G is designed to innovate sustainably.

Sustainable development is a simple idea. It's about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. At P&G, we view sustainability as a significant responsibility, and a continual source of opportunity. From our products to our operations, we embed sustainability into everything we do - in our business strategy and our holistic view of innovation. By incorporating sustainability into the rhythm of our work, we delight consumers who want to make sustainable choices but do not want to make trade-offs in performance or value. P&G contributes to sustainable development through both what we do and how we do it.

In 2009 Procter & Gamble were ranked
No. 1 for Sustainability in R&D in Germany. They were also a top 3 finalist for Sustainable Manufacturing.

P&G's 2012 Sustainability Strategies and Goals

Products
We set out to delight the consumer with sustainable innovations that improve the environmental profile of our products. Our goal is to develop and market at least $50 billion in cumulative sales of "sustainable innovation products".
This year, we launched Ariel Excel Gel, a highly compacted detergent in a gel form and a small pack. The product is designed for wash temperatures as low as 15 °C, saving up to 40% of energy in the wash cycle. Ariel Excel Gel contains 20% less chemicals per wash, and saves up to 45% in packaging versus common dilute liquid.

Operations
We are committed to improve the environmental profile of P&G's own operations. Our goal is to deliver an additional 20% reduction (per unit production) in CO2 emissions, energy consumption, water consumption and disposed waste from P&G plants, leading to a total reduction over the decade of at least 40%.
We are optimising the way we use transport to deliver fewer and friendlier miles. P&G aims to increase the use of rail transportation from 10% to 30% by 2015 in Western Europe through a project called Trains Intermodality, a New Approach. This project allows us to take trucks of the road and significantly reduce CO2 emission.
